About the Role

Build a production-grade exchange from scratch within 6 months and lead the migration of anexisting $1B+ daily volume futures business without compromising latency, reliability, or correctness. Take direct ownership of mission-critical systems operating at massive scale, with high autonomy, high impact, and minimal bureaucracy. Drive and define core architectural decisions from day one while shaping the foundation of the platform for long-term scalability and performance.

Key Responsibilities

End-to-end architecture ownership of core exchange systems
Design and build matching engine, order lifecycle (pre-trade, trade, post-trade), risk & liquidation, and market data pipelines
Build for ultra-low latency, high throughput, and deterministic execution at scale
Lead and mentor a ~25-member engineering team
Drive architecture reviews, system design decisions, and engineering best practices
Define latency budgets, throughput benchmarks, and performance SLAs
Design failure handling, fault tolerance, and recovery strategies
Build cloud-native, horizontally scalable systems with strict determinism requirements
Ensure production readiness through observability, rollbacks, and incident prevention mechanisms
Own reliability, correctness, and performance of mission-critical trading systemsYou'll Excel in This Role If You Have: - 15+ years of experience in backend engineering or distributed systems
Direct experience in one or more of the following domains:
Exchange systems / matching engines
HFT or ultra-low-latency trading infrastructure
Strong expertise in C++ for performance-critical systems
Deep understanding of multithreading, lock-free data structures, and memory optimization techniques
Solid grasp of network-level optimization (TCP/UDP, kernel tuning fundamentals)
Strong domain knowledge of:
Order matching
Trade lifecycle (pre-trade, trade, post-trade)
Clearing and settlement concepts
Proven experience building systems where latency, correctness, and uptime are equally critical Strong signals (good to have)
Experience building or scaling systems using Aeron or similar low-latency messaging frameworks
Experience with Apache Kafka for asynchronous or non-critical workflows
Familiarity with Kubernetes-based deployments
Experience designing or building:
Risk engines and liquidation systems
Market data distribution platforms
Hands-on experience with high-throughput systems (100K+ events/sec or equivalent scale)
Familiarity with Java-based trading or exchange ecosystems

Successful migration of existing $1B+ daily volume business with zero major incidents
Latency and throughput benchmarks are competitive with top-tier global exchanges
System demonstrates production-grade maturity with:
Full observability across critical paths
Strong fault tolerance and graceful degradation under stress
Stable performance under peak and extreme load conditions
Engineering organization is aligned on:
Strong ownership and accountability
High engineering standards and discipline
Consistent architecture and design principles across teams

Senior Staff Engineer
